Talk to us about:

What are Motorsport UK (MSA) radios?

Motorsport UK (formerly the Motor Sports Association, MSA) is the governing body for four-wheel motorsport in the UK. It manages dedicated Safety & Medical radio channels in the 81 MHz band, used by licensed officials, radio marshals, rescue and recovery units.

Motorsport UK / MSA radios are:

  • Pre-programmed to the correct licensed frequencies used for safety and medical traffic
  • Authorised for Motorsport UK use – they must meet technical requirements and be programmed correctly. See Motorsport UK’s Operational Guide for use of Radios on Motorsport Events (updated 13/12/2024) for details.
  • Typically used by radio marshals, safety car crews, race control, rescue/medical, recovery and other key officials

At RadioTrader we:

  • Supply radios configured to the Motorsport UK licensed frequency ranges required for your club or event
  • Offer free programming for any radio we supply (up to 10 channels)
  • Can programme your Motorsport UK / MSA call-sign into each radio for a small additional charge (contact us or see our Terms and Conditions)

If you’re unsure what you’re authorised to use, we can liaise with your club radio coordinator or point you to the right Motorsport UK guidance.

Typical radio setups for motorsport events

Every event is different, but there are common patterns in how Motorsport UK radios are deployed.

Circuit racing and track days

For club-level circuit racing and track days, radios are usually needed for:

  • Race control
  • Start/finish and grid
  • Marshals’ posts
  • Rescue, recovery and medical units
  • Pits and paddock

Typical mix:

Rallying and cross-country events

On rallies and cross-country events, long-distance radio coverage is critical for crews and officials.

Common users:

  • Stage start and finish
  • Intermediate radio points and spectator areas
  • Safety and medical units
  • Radio control / rally control

Typical mix:

  • High-spec mobiles in safety, medical and rescue vehicles
  • Robust handhelds for stage starts, finishes and mid-stage radio points
  • Portable or vehicle-mounted mast and antenna solutions where coverage is challenging

Hillclimbs, sprints and clubman events

Smaller events still need reliable communications, but the set-up can be simpler:

  • Clerk of the Course / event control
  • Timing / start-line team
  • Key marshal posts and paddock coordination

Typical mix:

  • A combination of handhelds and a small number of mobiles
  • Often a single Motorsport UK channel is sufficient, with clear call-sign discipline

Karting and smaller venues

For kart circuits and smaller club venues:

  • Race control
  • Marshals and recovery
  • Pit lane and grid

Typical mix:

  • Compact, lightweight handheld radios for marshals and pit staff
  • Option of headsets for start-line and grid personnel who work close to running engines

If you’re not sure how many radios or channels you need, we can suggest a starting template for your event.

Choosing the right motorsport radio equipment

We’ll guide you through the options, but as a starting point:

Handheld vs mobile radios

Handheld radios (portables)

Ideal for:

  • Marshals moving between posts
  • Paddock, pit lane and grid staff
  • Officials who need to be on foot

Key considerations include battery life, robustness (IP rating) and suitable accessories such as earpieces or remote speaker mics.

Mobile radios (vehicle-mounted)

Ideal for:

  • Rescue and recovery units
  • Safety cars, course cars and medical cars
  • Static race control positions

Key considerations are the antenna type and positioning (for maximum range), power supply and external speakers and microphones for noisy cabins or control rooms

Many Motorsport UK radio marshals use Tait and Motorola mobiles. As a registered distributor for both, we can recommend models proven in demanding motorsport environments.

Analogue vs digital in motorsport

Both analogue and digital radios are used in motorsport. The best choice depends on your current authorisation, equipment mix and budget.

Analogue radios

  • Compatible with many existing club fleets
  • Simple, reliable and cost-effective
  • Ideal if you’re adding a few extra sets to an established analogue setup

Digital radios

  • Improved audio clarity, especially at the edge of coverage
  • Useful features such as group calls, text messaging and emergency alerts
  • Better performance in noisy environments when paired with suitable headsets

We can help you decide whether to stay analogue, move to digital or operate a mixed fleet, and plan an affordable upgrade path.

Buy vs hire – what’s right for your club or team?

Some organisations buy radios, others hire – many do both.

Buying Motorsport UK radios

Best for:

  • Clubs or series that run multiple events each year
  • Rescue, recovery and medical units who need dedicated, always-available radios
  • Volunteer groups who regularly support different events across a region

Benefits:

  • One-off capital spend, with long service life from quality equipment
  • Radios are always available for training days and smaller events
  • Easier to maintain consistent programming, call-signs and accessories
  • Free programming (up to 10 channels) on any radio supplied by RadioTrader, with optional call-sign programming to match your Motorsport UK registration

Hiring radios for motorsport events

Best for:

  • One-off events or occasional meetings
  • Clubs expecting varying numbers of marshals and officials
  • Extra capacity when your own fleet isn’t quite big enough

Benefits:

  • No long-term commitment – pay only when you need extra sets
  • Radios arrive pre-programmed, fully charged and checked

RadioTrader offers affordable two-way radio hire packages, delivering professional-grade radios to any UK address. Hire fleets can be configured to your Motorsport UK frequencies and call-sign plan.

Headsets and hearing protection for motorsport

Engines, generators and PA systems create a lot of noise, so for many roles standard earpieces aren’t enough.

We stock a range of high-performance hearing protection headsets from brands such as 3M Peltor, MSA Safety and Hytera. Options include:

  • Helmet-mounted headsets
  • Headband and neckband hearing protectors with integrated communications
  • PTT (push-to-talk) and cable solutions compatible with popular Motorola, Tait, Hytera and other radios

Tell us which radios you’re using and how noisy your environment is, and we’ll suggest a headset setup that balances hearing protection, comfort and clear speech.

FAQs about Motorsport UK / MSA radios

Do I need a licence to use Motorsport UK / MSA radios?

Yes. The dedicated Safety & Medical frequencies are licensed and controlled by Motorsport UK. Radios must be authorised and programmed correctly. Most clubs and radio groups operate under Motorsport UK approval and have their own radio coordinator.

Can you programme our Motorsport UK / MSA call-signs into new radios?

Yes. We offer free channel programming (up to 10 channels) on radios we supply and can, for a small additional charge, programme your Motorsport UK call-signs so your new equipment matches your existing fleet and paperwork.

We already own some Motorsport UK radios – can you match them?

In most cases, yes. We can often take an existing radio as a reference, then match frequencies, channel order and call-sign labelling on new sets. If needed, we can also re-program and service your current fleet through our repair centre.

What range will we get from our radios at an event?

Range depends on many factors – terrain, antenna height, buildings, vehicles and weather conditions. We’ll discuss your venue, discipline and how you plan to deploy radios so we can recommend suitable power levels, antenna options and a realistic expectation of coverage.

Can we hire Motorsport UK-compliant radios for a single event?

Yes. We regularly supply short- and long-term hire fleets for one-off and seasonal events. Tell us how many users you have, your Motorsport UK authorisation details and any existing equipment you use, and we’ll put together a hire package to suit.

What next?

If you’re planning a new motorsport radio system, upgrading an existing fleet or simply need extra sets for a one-off event, we’re here to help.
